Later, that same month her mother was able to pack
up her family and move them to University Park away from her father. Although
she has not had any contact with her dad since they moved from the city, she
realizes as a parent herself that her mom made the best decision for them.
Living in the suburbs she became exposed to diversity. Ta’kenya stated that “before
she moved she never had the opportunity to learn in an environment with
individuals of another race”; she truly enjoyed it. Ta’kenya joined chorus, got
involved in dance and theater which lead to her being a part of an award winning
show with her choir in high-school called "Faces."
In addition,
Ta’kenya during this past summer has accomplished so much in her music career.
She recorded her album and that has been released; recently joined a foundation
for “The Arts” with a few other talented individuals. The program was
originated to teach children about expanding their gifts in a Creative Learning
Program which will be located in Chicago’s Roseland community.
As far as challenges go, Ta’kenya’s experiencing
them; she’s built up her endurance and continues to walk in love because all of
her struggles are worth fighting through. She tries not to look backwards and
focuses daily on the present, unless her testimony is relevant to someone else’s
deliverance she prefers not to bring them up. Many of the songs Ta’kenya has
written reflect on her past and present experiences.
Ta’kenya attended Millikin University and
graduated with a BA in Art Therapy, with a Minor in Vocal Performance and
Psychology. She is currently in graduate school for Art therapy. Ta’kenya is
known for her beautiful voice and she has also performed at poetry sets,
special shows for musical artist in the downtown Chicago area. She is also an
actress and recognized as a visual artist. Ta’kenya teaches art to students and
provides expressive therapy for all the children she encounters; encouraging
them to use their own creative gifts. She participates at her church New Life
Family Worship Center as a member of the children's ministry and the Theater
department.
She is apart of "Pipe down Production
Studios" a recording studio in South Holland, IL and a member of
"Rokittjohn World Wide Media Group" an Independent record label
connected with Def Jam Records.Ta’kenya has a strong love for God and she’s
grateful for the many blessings that he has placed in her life. One of her
favorite quote is "I am creator, Created to create." -Laff Simmons
